Background

In 2019 a Climate Emergency was declared by both Leeds City Council and Horsforth Town Council.

Late in 2021, Horsforth was identified to be a future Climate Action Leeds Community Climate Hub, which is funded through a National Lottery grant. Aligned to the ethos of Climate Action Leeds, the survey is built on the premise that climate action should be community led.

The purpose of the 2021 Horsforth Climate Survey was to collate community views to inform future work in this space, and to spark conversations on this important issue. On this webpage you’ll find details of the survey and its results, as reported in February 2022.

AIM

To gather feedback from the Horsforth community regarding their thoughts, feelings, actions and aspirations in regards to addressing climate change.

METHOD

People were invited to fill in an on-line survey between October and December 2021. The survey was promoted through local social media groups and local networks.

Plans were initially developed for paper versions of the survey to be printed and hand delivered to all local households. There were a number of reasons why this did not go ahead, including consideration of the environmental resource, financial and human support available.

WHO FILLED IN THE SURVEY?

248 online survey responses were logged between October and December 2021. Figure 1 shows that responses were received from a wide range of age groups (children through to people over 75 years old).

The distribution of age groups who responded to the survey (Figure 2) can be compared to the Office of National Statistics 2020 data (Figure 3). The survey results are likely to be less representative of those under the age of 25 as well as upper age groups, and over representative of those in their 30s and 40s.
